The Playbook

The guide for Alberta’s municipalities looking for data-driven, coordinated and impactful solution pathways that lower greenhouse gas emissions and increase resilience.

What is the Climate Leaders Playbook?

The Playbook is a guide for Alberta’s municipalities to take effective, realistic and transformative climate action.

Each section of the Playbook is guided by a Big Move: a specific area that local governments have significant responsibility over—and the opportunity to make a real difference for the climate.

From buildings and land use, to transportation, to waste management and renewable energy, the Playbook will help you understand how to achieve your climate goals.

Alignment with Explorer

With the Climate Action Explorer, you have access to greenhouse gas emissions modeling for every community in Alberta. Using the Explorer, you can understand where your community stands and calculate how much of a difference the Big Moves could make if implemented in your community.

Use the Explorer alongside the Playbook to understand the range of realistic possibilities (including inspiring and innovative examples from within Alberta) that can be taken to ambitiously tackle each Big Move in your community.

Methodology for the development of approaches

Alberta Climate Leaders developed a set of criteria that was used to evaluate potential actions for their highest impact to reduce emissions and climate risk and general feasibility for municipalities.

The Big Moves

These Big Moves are the most impactful ways for municipalities to reduce community emissions and build resilience.

For each Big Move, you’ll gain a better understanding of the policy background and what science tells us needs to happen. You will see where we stand today and learn what provincial and federal goals have been set for the next decade and to 2050.

Each Big Move includes a number of “local actions,” recommendations  based on the latest research and best practices for how your community can make progress on the Big Move.

And because knowing what to do is different than knowing how, all local actions are illustrated with a series of interventions (empower, incentivize, require, partner) that have shown to be effective ways for Alberta’s municipalities to make progress. Case studies from Alberta, BC and across Canada show just how realistic these interventions can be—and how innovative Albertans have been in finding new ways forward.

This is your community’s starting point for transformative change. Pick a Big Move and start exploring.
