About
Alberta Climate Leaders is offered in partnership by the Community Energy Association (CEA) and the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC).
The tools and programs that make up Alberta Climate Leaders are informed by the real-world experience of municipal staff and elected officials in Alberta, in-depth emissions data, and CEA and MCCAC’s combined climate and energy expertise.
Alberta Climate Leaders is funded in part by the Alberta Ecotrust Foundation’s legacy Major Project Grants Program, Edmonton Community Foundation, Government of Alberta, and Trottier Family Foundation.

Informed by data, designed for Alberta.
We’ve heard from local government leaders in Alberta that there is growing interest and support for action that reduces pollution and builds community benefits. Additionally, there is concern about increasingly frequent climate hazards and a desire to act to protect people and nature.
With this in mind, Alberta Climate Leaders offers programs and tools that integrate adaptation and mitigation strategies—minimizing conflicting efforts and maximizing impact. This approach, often called low carbon resilience, enables communities to act on climate change in an efficient and strategic manner, achieving tangible results while optimizing co-benefits.
Real-world experience and climate expertise.
The programs and solutions of Alberta Climate Leaders combine the real-world experience of Alberta’s local government leaders with data, research, and the climate and energy expertise of CEA and MCCAC.
The Community Energy Association (CEA) brings expertise in designing accessible resources, technical solutions, and contextualized interventions that have a measurable impact on emissions and reduce climate risk in municipalities and Indigenous communities across Canada.
The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) brings long-standing relationships, and proven impact in meeting the specific needs of Alberta municipalities as they advance renewable energy, reduce emissions, and adapt to climate change.

“Alberta Climate Leaders supports our municipalities in understanding how climate actions can improve access to funding and investment that opens up opportunities for local economic diversification and development.”
Councillor Bill Elliot, City of Wetaskiwin
Practical, connected, and developed for Alberta communities.
Alberta Climate Leaders provides a suite of tools to help local government leaders learn, plan and engage in climate action:
- Climate Leaders Playbook
- Climate Action Explorer
- Alberta Municipal Climate Leadership Council
- Alberta Climate Leaders Staff Peer Network
The Peer Networks are great places to find support for adapting the solutions outlined in the Playbook. And the Explorer can help communities understand where they can make the biggest impact.
The tools are designed to work as a system, supporting and building on each other. But you might only pick up one of them. They are meant to meet a community where they happen to be on the journey to low carbon resilience. Local leaders are encouraged to adapt these resources to what is needed and appropriate in each community.

“Through their collective efforts, municipalities can play a significant role in protecting our environment and building a more resilient future for Alberta.”
Councillor Joy-Anne Murphy, City of Camrose
